Dental X-Rays
Dental x-rays (radiographs) are preventative, diagnostic tools that provide information not visible during a regular dental exam. X-rays are used by dentists and dental hygienists to accurately detect hidden dental abnormalities and complete a treatment plan. X-rays prevent problem areas from going undetected.
Treating and detecting dental problems in early stages saves patients time, money, unnecessary discomfort and their teeth!
Are dental x-rays safe?
Natural radiation is something we are exposed to in our environment. Radiation exposure levels from a full mouth series of x-rays is similar to the amount a person is exposed to in a single day from natural sources.
The low level of radiation produced by dental x-rays are considered safe. Dentists work to limit the patient’s exposure to radiation when taking dental x-rays. Precautions include using lead aprons to shield and protect the body. The use of modern, fast film cuts down the exposure time of each x-ray.
Dental x-rays may reveal:
Abscesses or cysts
Bone loss
Cancerous and non-cancerous tumors
Decay between the teeth
Developmental abnormalities
Poor tooth and root positions
Problems inside a tooth or below the gum line
