Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease attacks the gums and bone around the teeth. Unremoved sticky film, food debris and bacteria known as plaque that is not removed, turns into tartar. Plaque and tartar thar are not removed, begin to destroy the gums and bone. Red, swollen, and bleeding gums characterize periodontal disease.

Periodontal disease is the number one reason for tooth loss. Research suggests that there may be a link between periodontal disease and other diseases including: cardiovascular disease, stroke, bacterial pneumonia, diabetes and increased risk during pregnancy. Current research is working to determine if inflammation and bacteria associated with periodontal disease affect these systemic diseases and conditions. Smoking also leads to an increased risk of periodontal disease.

Periodontal disease is painless in the early stages causing many people to not be aware they have the disease. The treatment for periodontal disease depends upon the severity and type of the disease.
